Lots of people want to *be* a writer, but not many want to *do* writing. So be really honest with yourself how much you want to sit alone for hours every day -- and often long into the night.
Non-fiction offers the most work, either as staff or freelance for newspapers or magazines (you usually need journalism schooling for staff jobs). Writing for print pays way less than writing for broadcast. Fiction is incredibly tough to survive on, and writing books and screenplays is beyond nearly all beginners (unless you're independently wealthy).
Here's my most important advice: check out which writers groups are in your town, phone them, go to their meetings, then decide which group you want to join. Every writer, especially when beginning, learns a *huge* amount from hanging around other writers.

why do you think you want to be a writer? If its for fame and fortune, yes forget it.
But if you want to write because you like to put words and ideas on paper (or screen) that give it a try. You'll soon know if you're a writer, or just someone who thinks they want to be a writer.
Write an essay, or story about someone you know. Write an article about something you feel strongly about. write a letter response to the newspaper about something in the news.
If grammar and/or spelling are holding you back, use the checks on the computer to at least let you start. There will be a lot of red and green squiggly lines for a while, but you'll also learn the correct way to spell and write.
You will also need someone you trust to look over your work and give you advice. I suggest a teacher (present or past).

Well, you may not be a good writer now but if you take some classes and learn what it takes you may become great. You would need to take literature, grammar, creative writing, and just a lot of English classes in general. If you are willing to take those first steps we may have a world class author in our midst.

writing WELL is something that can be learned, but only to a certain extent. If you really want to write, then you may be able to learn how to do it, the best way is to read a LOT! take some creative writing classes, and write all the time. the only way to get better is to practice. However, if you don't think you'll ever be able to write well, then you might consider finding someone who can write well and do partnership writing, co-authoring. you can tell your stories that way and the other can help you improve your writing. good luck.

Pursue your dreams and fulfill your ambition. If you're truest desire is to be a writer, you'll find a way to learn to write better. The power of motivation and a positive attitude will carry you farther in life than any sum of experience.

If you think you are passionate about writing and you really want to write, then I say go for it. Don't think about how well you can write stories, just keep writing, and I'm sure you can come up with something good.
Good luck!
