Okay - he was the messenger of the gods, and he saw fleet of foot (wings on his feet). So FTD is trying to say that they will deliver flowers faster and better than anyone else, and that their flowers are fit for the "gods".

Hermes (Greek) is the messenger from the gods to humans.
FTD's is actually Mercury (Roman).
Primarily symbolizes: "Speedy delivery"
Secondary, the Mercury Network, a world wide network of florists.
Nothing more nothing less...

speedy delivery. hermes was the messenger of the Gods and has wings on his boots which make him move FAST so FTD adopted that image to portray fast delivery

Yeah, I think it's Mercury.
Hermes is a bit naughty, a trickster, a thief. I don't know that you want him as a delivery boy.
