My kids are going to their grandparents for Feb. vacation and all we really know is they live in a retirement community. What other cities are near it? How big is the population? Any info would help my kids not to think it is going to be boring.

Yup, Been to Ellenton Mall too!
There is a big outlet mall located there. Its south of Tampa Bay. Near Brandon area and further south of it is Sarasota, which is a lovely area with a beautiful beach and a cute area called Armands Circle with lots of small boutiques, restaurants and ice cream shop!
You can take them to Busch Gardens, thats not too far, maybe about an hour drive, if that! Great place for kids to unwind and go on some rollercoasters or check out the animals or even go on some water rides, and even see some cool live shows they offer there.
Those are few things that are around. Lots of beaches in the area. Ft. Desoto and even St. Pete Beach isnt too far away or Indian Rocks Beach. Thats all close. Plus we have a really cool bridge called The Sunshine Skyway, great place to go fishing, too!
