I think there can be more than one answer because everyone comes at it with their own perceptions. And there in lies what Plato is getting at. In my opinion...The cave is a metaphor for for our physical surroundings, the shadows are our sensory experience and the sun is reality. Until we see the light we are ignorant.

You need to read Book VII of Plato's Republic for yourself. You will discover that some elements of the cave myth or allegory are non-negotiable. The cave, for instance, represents the realm of the visible or sensible realm. The Sun is the Good or principle of intelligibility, whereas the rugged steep ascent pictures the upward journey of the soul toward the realm of the intelligible. Plato's cave myth teaches us much about the educational curriculum for the Platonic philosopher-rulers.

hey! we jus studied this last semester in college. uh...no there can be several answers. the whole meaning is people gaining intelligence and need to teach it to others but the others are afraid of knowledge.
