Which is the best and cheapest way to get a room in Vegas: making advance reservation (online or phone) or showing up the front desk the day of arrival and getting the room right there and then. Arriving in Vegas on a Sunday and staying for 4 days. Please advise.

Always, always, always book your rooms as far in advance as you can in Las Vegas. Then keep on looking for better deals all the way up until the time you go. Las Vegas room rates are a whole other animal, they go up and down more than the stock market...

First off, you're doing the right thing to keep cost down, Sunday through Thursday is the time to go. The best way to get deals is check online sites, and compare to the hotels web site. Some LV hotels have best rate guarantees, these include all of the Coast and Harrah's hotels..I will give you both sites to check
http://www.orleanscasino.com >Coast hotels
http://www.harrahs.com >Harrah's hotels >Will beat any online rate you find by 25% (IF) you follow their rules...

The advantage of booking through the hotel over buying a package from a wholesaler is, you can always cancel the hotel reservation if/when you find a better deal, even if that better deal is with that hotel..Use the LVA site below to sign up for e-mail up dates from any hotel that you're interested in..They usually only send out specials a month or two ahead...

If you don't have dates already, try Sunday May 27 for 4 nights - there are some great rates for those dates..

Get an advance reservation. The hotels know what conventions are coming into town or what events (i.e. Rodeo championships) that you might not care to know about.

Las Vegas is a location that attracts a lot of conventions and vacationing guests so at a moments notice the hotels will get tied up. Especially on or near the strip (Las Vegas Blvd).

I've gotten hotels the night before at a nice hotel at reasonable prices, but other times I've had problems getting a hotel a week or more in advance. So it depends when you're going.

Definitely make a reservation but be sure to shop around and check the hotel websites because they often run online deals that the reservation staff won't tell you about over the phone. Also, you stand a good chance of getting a deal since you are not staying over a weekend! Good for you! And, to maximize your chances of a good deal, consider staying off the strip. Hotels like the Orleans run shuttles to their counterpart on the strip the Barbary Coast and rental cars can be as cheap as 25 a day if you book in advance. Cheers!
