I think we need a lot more information. Do you depend on this person being at work in order for you to get your work done? Is their absense affecting the ability of you or your team to meet deadlines? You said "coworker", but are you in management? If your answers are "no" to these questions, then maybe you don't need to deal with them at all.

Depends on weather or not the co worker is actually sick or not. If they are sick pray for them and have a little compassion and if they are just a slacker you should let the co worker know how it makes you feel to have to do their work on top of theirs, but maybe you could just be thankful for the days when they are there cause if they got fired you would have to pick up their slack anyway and then when they hired someone new chances are they would do something to bother you also. It may even be worse.

Not sure. I have the same issue. I work in a small office, only 3 other people and I am always the first one here and the only one that has to worry about whether or not everyone else is gonna be here! God forbid I get sick and have to stay home!

Hopefully your supervisor is aware of this as well. If their work is something that can be left for when they come back, don't do their job for them, let them come back to twice the work.
You might want to explore whether or not the absences are trully necessary. If they are sick with cancer and just not telling anyone, it would be awful to treat them bad, however if they are just calling out because they don't feel like working that is another story.

Why is this YOUR problem? Let the company for which you both work deal with this person. Really, it should be of no concern to you. Even if you work in a small offcie, if the powers-that-be do not want to deal with it, then there is nothing you can do about it.

Are they really sick, do they have a recurring health problem, are they a friend?
I think you know the answer, its not your problem unless they are really sick.
