The cat has never been domesticated. Don't let the name fool you; though there is a "domesticated" cat, it is certainly not domesticated. Such a cat merely tolerates humans better than a traditional wild or feral cat.
Dogs however are domesticated.

Added info: the cheetah, one of the big cats, is more like a dog than a cat in many ways. It has been successfully domesticated. Note the tail and the lack of retractable claws.

The dog. It is quite likely that the dog was the first domesticated animal, and probably predates the cat by at least several thousand years and possibly much more. Cats are more difficult to tame than dogs because they are solitary by nature while dogs are pack animals and so more easily form bonds with humans.

Neither. A man was domesticated first. He couldn't stand it so he got a dog. His wife was miffed so she got a cat. That's how it all got started. And ever since, they've been fighting like, well, cats and dogs. :))
(I wonder how many idiots will find this offensive too)

It was the dog. Humans' and dogs' ancestors forned a bond. In the beginning, it was for the procurement of food. The dogs would track the animals humans would hunt them and both people and dogs were assured a meal. Dogs became protectors to the humans. In turn, humans became nurturers to the dogs.

i believe the Egyptians were the first to domesticate animals, at least that's documented, and that would be the cat, because they believed they were protectors of the underworld.
