It is actually a representative republic. If we had a true democracy, we would be voting at the polls every hour of every day on every single issue. Instead we vote in people to represent our ideals to vote on these issues for us. Unfortunately, the people we've put in place to represent us are screwing us left and right.

We enjoy letting people represent our thoughts. We elect people to represent us in government. This keeps us from having chaos that sometimes arises in a direct democracy. Our government was laid out in the Constitution which was writtenin 1787 and other than the 27 amendments is still very adaptable and effective today. The writers of the Constitution were tired of the English King ruling them with almost absolute power, so they created a unique government that had never been tested but they thought would work. And bingo, we still follow the Constitution and have the same rights today. Amazing that a document so old can still apply to these times. This is one reason I think the US is such a great nation. We have been through it all and have survived over 200 years.

Because it is unrealistic to expect the citizenry to vote on every single matter that confronts the country. Instead we are supposed to elect leader to represent our views. Somewhere our best interests have taken a back seat to obtaining and keeping power.

We have 300 million citizens. How could 300 million people each individually participate in the legislative process? It wouldn't be possible. Hence, large groups of people must elect representatives to legislate on their behalf.
