As a Brit, I envy your system which not only executes the convicted baddies in certain States but where that is not appropriate, the convicted criminal is sentenced to hundreds of years in prison. In the UK some convicted lifers are released on licence after a few years and our present Labour Government, led by Blair and Brown have spent so much money on war etc. that our prisons have generally not been updated and now do not have the capacity to hold these felons for the full period of their sentence. I thought the US Courts sentenced the prisoner to the death penalty and in the interest of justice either the President or the State Governors confirmed or deferred the sentence.

I am not sure how many Bush as governor sentenced to death.
But what is “cruel and unusual punishment” is the fact that so many of the people on death row sit in prison for so many years only knowing that they are going to die. That is very cruel. I cannot say I disagree with the death penalty in some cases such as the willful murder of another person, but if you are going to do it make sure the person is guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt and do not take years and years to do it.

As governor of Texas, he authorised 152 executions in six years.

That's an average of two per month. People in Texas must be a real unruly bunch!

I always believed that Executions in America were a descision made by the state governers not the President.

no idea!

but tell me this - how does 'the land of the free' allow capital punishment?

why do the U.K. courts not define it as 'cruel and unusual punishment?' and block any extraditions to the U.S. for suspects facing this sentence?

we Brits have totally abolished it under the Human Rights Act, endorsed by Brussels.

If you include Iraq and the British Troops executed by friendly fire together with women and children it must run into hundreds of thousands

Don't know - but capitol punishment is Biblical and necessary for those that have been proven guilty 100% Eye for Eye. It's killing not murder. I would expect execution if I murdred another human being - no matter my "god experience" in jail - it's a consequence!
