Most "commercial cosmetics" are red-based, whereas the majority of people have yellow-based skin. If you have yellow-based skin and wear red-based foundation, it will make you look orange, so your face and neck color don't match.

I'm an "odd color" too (mixed race) and used to have a color-matching problem. I've started using Sacha cosmetics, which is promoted as yellow-based makeup and it looks much better than anything I've tried before. Also, I have really sensitive skin and Sacha doesn't bother my skin at all.

I order from www.alittlebitofpamper.com, which is UK-based.

I recommend getting one of the three-color tester kits before you buy a whole compact, though. Also, keep in mind that even if you use a yellow-based foundation, if you put red-based powder (which most are, even though they look beige in the compact) over that, you can still come out looking orange.

Also, as any portrait photographer knows, the ingredients in some makeup can make them look different colors in different types of light. If you’re in a portrait studio, you can work around it, but in day to day life, I still don’t know what to do about it. Stop worrying, I suppose... :-)

Good luck

I'm an in betweeny colour myself !.. Ivory is usually too pale and a beige can sometimes be a little to dark, so I have to mix two together to get the perfect shade sometimes. Firstly I think that having a makeover in a department store etc, really isn't the best idea as the lighting is much different. Great if your off out on the town! but as soon as you step out into the harsh daylight any faults with show. As for getting the righte shade for your tone, I would suggest spending a day with some tester bottles, put little finger blobs on the inside of your lower arm of avout 3/4 different shades that you think are near your tone then go outside into the light!.. you will see which ones are too dark too pale etc.. any that seem pretty close keep a note of and then put some on your jaw line, go back into the daylight and you want to see that when you gently rub it on the skin that it either matched perfertly or perhaps you need a slightly darker.. lighter shade... This is time consuming and best you if have a friend to help with a mirror!.. but worth it in the long run as when you find one that works, it will be sooo worth it!.. You may have to try different brands, as not all 'ivory or light biege etc are the same!.. I don't know of anywhere who mixes to match... but I hope you find your perfect foundation soon :-)

I have always had trouble getting just the right shade that looks natural, yet keeps my complexion looking beautiful. I found the best thing to use is the newer line of natural, talc free, foundations like Bare Essentials. There are several that you can now buy from local retailers. Just look for the all natural, mineral foundation powders. Also, I have really dry skin, and these powders are still great. I get compliments every time I am out; I never did with the other foundations.

Try No7 Intelligent Colour. You can get it in several tones to suit your skin and it is Hypo-allergenic and cheaper than many other makes. Feels like silky powder on your skin!
You can always test it in Boots Chemist!

Clinique has an awesome foundation. It is actually a tinted sunscreen that blends in to most skin types! I hope this helps.
