The idea, though I do not know the origin, is that it is based upon the love of the country as if it is a fine woman, to loved and fought for. It probably emerged in war propoganda, perhaps with World War I.

Lots of things are given a masculine or feminine pronoun. I would guess it has something to do with people referring to their country of origin their"mother country". That's the best I can come up with.

It may go back to the word country in the Latin language which is
patria, patriae( consider it in Latin to be a feminine noun) meaning country.
