i've never traveled or been out of the country, so when i arrive to the airport, are there taxi cabs that you ride to get around? to get to the hotel and other places?

I didnt fly into the Airport in Amsterdam, but they have tons of public transports there. See if they have a shuttle that takes you to the hotel. Second of all, how long are you going to be there? Gotta take into account currency exchange if you are american, dollars are weak compared to the Euros. You can rent a bike while you are over there, and that can save you money on transportation. But its a fairly small city you can walk around and just have a great time. If you plan on doing some extracurricular activies while you are out there, and I think you know where im going on that, bring some extra cash if you want to sample the local passtime. Food isnt exactly cheap though, so im sure you might get the munchies, but they got great small stores that cater to those needs.
Amsterdam has bikes and trams. Those are the two biggest ways of transport. When you get there, you willnotice that mostely everyone rides a bike, so becareful where you walk, they have lanes designated JUST for bikes. I say go for the bike, thats what I did when I was there, it was fun!
