We give them out because it is a tradition, and also because it's fun. It's not been too many years since the school kids would make home made cards, now there are so many to buy with every cartoon character you can imagine. For people not in school anymore, a card is just a thoughtful way to express love. You can say "I love you" every day, but to see it in writing is very special. This is the main holiday for doing that. On Mothers' day or birthdays, we just honor the person, but Valentine's day, you almost have to express the emotion of love.

The purpose of Valentine's Day cards is to tell someone that you love them. You can send them to anyone you love, not just the person you love in a romantic way. Parents might give a Valentine's card to their children, and kids make them for their parents. Valentine's cards are special because they are a way to express love.
