If the car is making a loud howling noise coming from the general area of the wheel well yes the bearing is most likely pooched. One way to test this is if you know which side it is while you are driving turn the wheel to the suspected side and if the howl goes away you know thats your problem.By turning the vehicle to the suspected side you take some of the load off of it and it will quiten down.If you dont know which side this test will also tell you.

A bad bearing can sound like ball bearings in a blender. A bad CV axel can cause the same problem. Does the sound change when going around a corner as you turn the wheel? I would lean more towards looking at the CV shafts first since you are saying 30 mph before noticable.

if it makes a grinding noise its the wheel bearing. you cant change just the bearing, i'm pretty sure its mandatory to change the whole hub. which means removing the steering knuckle. like that guy already said, jack it up and spin the wheel by hand to make sure. It's a good idea to change both sides it can make the new parts work against the old with the diff. in resistance.
who ever said cv joints and trans axels doesnt know. those would make clicking sounds when you make turns.

always check pads and rotors/drums. warped rotors happen, debris could get stuck between pad rotor causing grooves

More likely a bad CV joint rather than a bearing. Yes they can get quite noisy.
Have you r tires rotated first. If the sound moves to where the tire is remounted than you have tire noise which is common with old cupped worn tires.

Definately yes, its metal on metal grinding, of course it could be a bad transaxle or transmission problems too. I'd jack up the wheel and turn it by hand to see if you can detect any odd noise.

yes, a bad wheel bearing will make alot of noise but also your rear end differential (chunk) will whine pretty loud when it is shot too

A bad wheel bearing gets louder the faster you go. If it's already screaming like a banshee, get it replaced before you kill yourself and others.
