In 2003 the BBC did The Big read. Unfortunately it coincided with the release of the film version of The Lord of the Rings which I think influenced the vote. What do you think?

No, the Lord of the Rings was certainly a good fantasy series, but hardly award material.

Dont get me wrong, the series is responsible for many people's love for reading(including myself, partially). It is certainly very well written and has many hidden meanings/lessons. Although you need to also consider how many wonderful and influential books have been written. I seriously doubt anyone can honestly say that any of the Lord of the Rings series are the most important books written.

It has been one of my favourite books for years. I thought the films were good, except for "Return of the King" film which was AWFUL. It is the only book that I read when I was 8 that I still would read now I am 26 and still enjoy. A lot of books I read these days are either too academic or adult themed for kids to ever enjoy.
I would say it is certainly one of the best books because it made a previously obscure genre very popular and it is a book that can be adored by all ages and cultures. The characters are good and develop, the plot is interesting and colourful and the descriptions of the locations and people are vivid and articulate.
I certainly think the book deserves to be considered amongst the best. The films on the other hand should be considered mediocre over all.

Yes, I think The Lord of the Rings deserves to be voted 'best book'. Think about it. It was originally published in 1954/54. It's on it's umpteenth-whatever reprint, and it's been printed in something like 38 languages. There are dozens of books written ABOUT the LOTR books. There is a 12 book series detailing the writing of the LOTR. It's been adapted for radio, stage, and film. There are role playing games and video games and board games. There wouldn't be all those things if they weren't great books.

FRODO LIVES! And always will live, in the hearts and thoughts of so many people.

Absolutely. Although I can understand its charms, and I admire Tolkien's erudition, it has boring passages, and I can think of many
better written or more influential books. Also the Best Book idea is missing the point as some genres are not comparable, and I don't know about you, but my choices depend on the mood I am in. You cannot compare 'Lord of the Rings' with 'The Rack' for instance, nor has the book made people think about serious subjects like 'The Silent Spring' or Doris Lessing's work which helped change prejudiced minds.

I read the books far before the films were even thought about. They are a fantastic series of books in which one has to be very into reading. You can't have no interest in such a topic and be able to read these books. I did enjoy the films, but they didn't do a ton of justice to the books. I vote LOTR as the best book over any others any day.

Yes, the Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, nothing else i have read even compares to it (except the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan) and i hate it when people compare it to Harry Potter, it is good no doubt but it lacks the creative and imagenative touches of The Lord f the Rings.
