It is often the truth.

Someone on here gave the example of a homeless guy with cracked teeth. What nobody could see in a situation like that is that guy could have been kicked out of his home as a result of a divorce, gotten an apartment, lost his job, and eventually had no place to go. If he were a professional guy and, say, over 50, he could run into companies who would not hire him in his professional because of his age but companies/retail places who wouldn't hire him because they (as DOES happen) believed he would "just quit" once he got "his own kind of job". As a result, he would have no place to live. Suppose he tried a homeless shelter, got hit in the teeth by a crazy person, and then didn't have the money to get his teeth capped.

People don't like to believe its that easy to become a homeless guy with cracked teeth because they don't get to feel superior and think, "It wouldn't happen to me." Maybe it wouldn't happen to some people, but it could happen to a guy with a great education and resume who is also an excellent father.

In a world that is so full of people who do go by appearances, however, this guy doesn't stand much of a chance of any potential employer's ever figuring out that if he had the money for a suit, a car, and some dental work he'd be just like all those other people (maybe better) working on the corporate floor.

Not always the truth... for the most part though yes.

For instance, there is a reason that homeless people with crack teeth don't get upper management jobs. We know they're lack of will power and good judgement by the decisions they obviously made in the past from their current appearance.

The maxim is "Appearances CAN be deceiving". It doesn't mean that they always are deceiving. One must use common sense and reasoning in order to discriminate what is truth, and what only appears to be truth. When in possible danger, caution is the better part of valor.

In sociology and other social sciences we tend to steer clear of the words always and never. So for the most part I wouldn't judge someone on appearances. If you have to judge on any basis, judge on personality and how they treat others. Not appearances.

No, not always. There is NO ABSOLUTES in life.
That homeless guy may not be a bum, he may be nice/considerate as pie, friendly and helpful and attempting to put his life back, but circumstances...
That women cashing in the foodstamps with 6 kids in tow, may not be 'breeding' but instead, her hard working fireman rushed into a tower and they didn't carry more life insurance....
YET, THAT GUY in a dark parking lot, leaning up to a pole, smoking and watching........WHY take a chance. The ODDS are he IS upto NO GOOD

Never judge a book by its cover. If you're talking about people, it's nice to give them a chance, learn about them a little bit, I mean, yes, sometimes by looking at someone (ie. homeless people) you can take a good guess at how well they take care of themselves (clean hair, nice clothes, etc). I'm a strong 'chances' believer, just because someone appears to be different doesn't always mean they are any different than you or I.

Nope, sometimes what you see isn't what you get. I've met online ppl irl that didn't look anything at all like the pics they were using. It was very funny. You have to be careful and try not to judge. We all have faults, some more than others.

yes it always is the truth everyone wears a mask so to speak they push out what they want the world to see in order to assimilate into society but the real person is seldom ever portrayed as they know they would not be seen as they want to be seen

When it comes to people that use appearances to mislead you the answer is yes, but not everyone is dishonest and running on an agenda. It all boils down to each persons capacity to be honest with themselves first then others.
