Quoted from the Wikipedia link below: "The California Republic, also called the Bear Flag Republic, was the result of a revolt by Americans on June 14, 1846, in the town of Sonoma against the authorities of the Mexican province of California; the Republic lasted less than a month."
Check out the link; it has a good, if brief, history of the good, if brief, Republic of California.

It was a very brief event without much significance. About all it did was leave us with the Bear Flag. A small band of Americans took over the then capital and put up the Bear Flag. No one at the time took it seriously. The real independence came with the end the Mexican war with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

It should have been the Pear Flag republic.
Someone said 'Put something Californain on it - like a pear!' The designer misheard it as 'Bear'.
