We didn't *need* slavery, but it was sort of a natural effect of the times -- the white settlers had never seen black people before and thought they were subhumans and not worthy of being treated humanely. At the same time, they needed cheap labor for economic development. I don't know whether slaveowners would have enslaved white men, but I would guess not -- from what I remember of history lessons, the slaveowners really did not think that black people were full humans and worthy of being treated well.

I don't know if I can help you out much, but I just want you to remember that there was slavery long before the U.S. became a country. In the old, old days, slaves could be any race or nationality. Whoever conquered another made the conquered people their slaves. Romans made all different sorts of people their slaves. The same goes for blacks. It started out because they were easy to acquire in Africa. Europeans and the like were more powerful and could easily defeat African people. They were "taking over" or "kidnapping" them so to say. It wasn't because they were black that they made them slaves. But after having so many black slaves in the newly developed US, people just started attaching the slave thing to their skin color. That is where the racism began.

The main purpose of slavery was the production of cheap labor. All the slave owner had to do was to keep their slave alive and healthy. Slaves meant money to early settlers. There's 2 really good stories about slavery from biblical times as well as 18th century America...Roots by Alex Haley and the Ten Commandments by Cecil B. DeMille.

These two stories (movies) really underscore the awful conditions of black slaves and Jewish slaves respectively. But, you also see where the slaves meant wealth and meant that work would be done to progress the farmland or cities of the slave owners.

Slavery went on long before America started buying slaves (1700's).

Warring tribes would raid a village and sell everyone into slavery. Men, woman and children.

Did we "need" slavery, no we didn't "need" it but it happened none the less.

Everyone at some point in time has been enslaved.

Slavery was an economic consideration long before it had anything to do with race. You might want to do a bit of reading about the history of slavery. I'm sure it would help you with your project much more than looking for quick and easy answers here would.

it started in virgina where the plantaion owners had too much land to harevest and reap...so they needed help. the indians could not work for they were not immune to the disease and they were weaker (as the spanish figured out eralier). Also the african americans did not know the territory, so the plantation owner was more confident that the slave would not run away. Most africans were in a diffrent typ of slavery called indensure(my spelling is off im sry) and that is where they could work their way out of slavery. ; )

Cheap labour, and part of the spoils of war..

Slavery did not start with "Whites" capturing "Blacks". That is revisionist. Slavery has been a world wide phenomenon for thousands of years.

Slavery ended nearly one hundred and fifty years ago.
You need to do some research on your own about the subject of slavery in American history. The purpose of schoolwork is to learn.
