I have followed the MLB for several seasons now, but this season, I am wanting to try fantasy baseball. However, I don't really know what I'm doing. I have an idea of the concept, and it sounds entertaining. But I really don't even know where to start. Does anybody have some tips for a beginner, or maybe an overview of what I need to know/do to get started? Thanks, I appreciate it.

How to sign up?
You already have a Yahoo ID because you are on answers. I think you should stay with what you are comfortable with, so play YAHOO Fantasy Baseball. Go to http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/ and it explains how to sign up. Sign-ups don't begin until Thursday however.
You should probably play a public league to begin with.
Then buy a fantasy baseball mag and make your cheat sheet out. You know, a list of your favorite picks at each position, SP, RP, 1B, 2B, etc.
Tips?
Don't draft closers too early.
Yahoo public leagues are 12 team leagues. Do a google search for "fantasy baseball mock drafts" and find a 12 team mock draft. Going by that, you'll get an idea of where each player should be drafted. Some fantasy baseball mags have mock drafts as well.
Draft players that get you points in the most categories. For example, Alex Rodriguez helps you in 5 categories. Joe Nathan helps you in 1 - saves. Obviously you'd take A-Rod first.
A decent website on Fantasy Baseball basics is at http://www.rotowire.com/baseball/101/basics.htm

Ya. Dont draft pitchers in the top 3 or 4 rounds unless there isnt really a position you need that is left. Wait a long time to draft a closer. Look for an all around guy in the first round, not just someone that hits homeruns or gets a lot of hits. Also, dont always take the guy you know or who plays for your favorite team. Dont be biased, and take the best player. Also have a couple of players picked out that you want for the next round. I say a few because some could be taken. Also open youre draft page then open a seperate window so you can check player stats and if you are searching for a player you can find what number he is.

Listen , get you the upper hand right now and find SI Fantasy Baseball picks for the 07 season, and start from there. If you play on Yahoo, you can always look for the experts to give you run downs on players to drafts as the Season gets underway. As far as drafting , you draft by feel, Don't listen to anyone who says don't draft pitchers too early or catchers to early or any of that mumbo jumbo, Me personally I draft pitchers early so I can use them for trade bait later in the season. You don't have to always draft stud players early because role players and consistent players will do just fine. remember the baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint, and it's essential that you draft accordingly.
When drafting for a roto league you want players that are consistent through all the categories and players that bring more to the table than just HR and RBI's, etc....
when drafting for a head to head, you want players who are going to give you the "big bang" Pitchers included. The other team maybe stacked and you need a stacked team to compete.
Like all fantasy sports it's important to finish the season despite what place you're in, be active and follow closely. Winning is not impossible it just take work. I started Fantasy play 2 years ago, with one team, and now i have three ID's and over 20 trophies to show for it, you can win when you put your mind to it.
leaders innovate, followers imitate.
Which one are you?

DONT DO THIS
Alex H. said to trade players who get injured fast before others figure it out.... WRONG!!!
This is cheating and If you tried to pull that in any of my leagues Alex I would make sure your deal wouldnt go through. Your a dick for doing that to begin with.
GM's in real baseball cant get away with that so why should it be allowed in fantasy.

Just have fun with it man. Go with the hot hand. Sometimes it's better to go with a player that is hot than it would be to go with a famous player that isn't producing (like Sammy Sosa in his last year playing). I made the mistake a lot of just keeping the famous players. It's a long season, but a lot of fun. Good luck man.

Important tips man...
DONT forget to update your team every day.
if your player gets injured, try to trade him as quickly as possible before other people figure out.
watch for players that have been dropped and pick them up right away if you need their stats.
DONT focus too much on their overall stats. look at how theyve been doing recently. this especially applies to rookies.
Other than that, play whoever is hot, and good luck!
