Open with your family's home before they left. Where it was, what their life was like, how many in the family at that time. What made them choose to leave and was it difficult. Did they leave other family members or friends behind? After that, go into the experiences of coming over and getting settled, then work forward in time to the present.
What a great assignment. Save it when you're done, to hand down to your own kids.

Ignore the first paragraph, write it later. Work on the outline of what events you want to include. Then put them in order that makes sense, and then finally make the beginning and end paragraph with a tie to each other, or one of the most interesting points you make in the body of the essay.

When I was eight years old my family decided to immigrate to the United States. I remember my father going to make arrangements for our travel....
We had lived in the little town of ???? and now we no longer felt safe or my father was not able to support his family there now.. or we decided to travel as our other relatives were also making the trip.... .......good luck.
