There were 4 distinct causes:
1. A spirit of nationalism, caused largely by mass education, heightened tensions between nations (Patriotism)
2. An Arm's Race (Militarism) encouraged nations to equate safety to military power
3. The system of Alliances guaranteed all of Europe would go to war. (Austria-Hungary with the German Empire and Italy formed the Triple Alliance; Russia, France, and Britain formed the Triple Entente (meaning agreement). Later, the United States would join the Triple Entente.)
4. Fierce competition for the world's resources (Imperialism)
Also noteworthy is that Italy did not go to war quickly as the treaty it had with the German Empire was only an agreement to come to their aid if they were attacked. The German Empire attacked both Russia and France and so Italy claimed not to be obligated.
Additionally, Russian agreement to protect the Serbians from the Austro-Hungarian attack started the spark of treaties effects, because the German Empire immediately was forced to declare war on Russia after Austria Hungary began to fight the Serbian resistance. Austria-Hungary's decision to attack was based upon the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary.

A rat's nest of treaties caused a single assassination to snowball into WWI.
The real reason...Germany was late to the party and most of the world was already divided up (Africa, Asia, the America's) and they wanted a piece.
