They should eat any flake foods. If not, go get a few live plants. Pacus are vegetarians.

Like was already said, Pacus grow very large. They will get to 2 feet long and will weigh upwards of 40 pounds. Their extremely hard head and very fast swimming makes it very easy for them to crash through the glass of a fish tank. They also need to swim in schools. For these reasons, they should not be kept in anything less than 1000 gallons, and are really best suited for a tropical pond.

Pacu's are cousins to piranha, only they are vegetarian.Foods high in vegetable content are appropriate, they make great pets if you have a tank of about a thousand gallons. It will get too big too fast and no-one that knows anything about fish will take them off your hands.Even public aquariums have all the Pacus they need. However there is one solution, they are delicious. I've eaten Pacu several times while fishing in the Amazon. Don't buy fish from people who know nothing about them. Don't buy fish if you don't know anything about them. With the resources available on the net this situation should never happen.-------Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.---PeeTee

Its wonderful that you have an appropriate environment to keep a pacu. They're often owned by people who have no idea about the adequate space necessary to keep them. As far as feeding goes you generally want to keep juveniles on a regular feeding schedule 2-3 times per day. Its great to vary their diet during these feedings. If you're able to I would feed fresh vegetables at least a few days each week. Pellets are preferred since it helps develope their powerful jaw bone. Its best to feed veggie rounds and wafers as the fish ages though as they are primarily vegetarians. As your fish gets older feeding twice per day will be adequate and you can vary the vegetable diet with shelled nuts. In the wild pacu get the majority of their protein from nuts floating on the water's surface and on the river floor. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I agree, you should rethink keeping a pacu, they are really best left to a public aquarium.

But in the mean time you can feed it pelleted foods heavy in vegetable matter.

unless you have a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge tank, i would return the fish. How big is your tank?
Try feeding feeder fish if it is large enough, otherwise like cichlid pellets or something
