It is a remote control just like for your TV. It sends out a infrared light beam from a LED on the front of the remote to a infrared receptor. Embedded in the light beam are other frequencies that tells the the thermometer what you want to do. Turn on or off, increase the temperature or decrease the temperature.

If you are talking about a hand held thermometer, then there are two possibilities I can think of. Both do about the same. One is infrared and the other is a laser. With the laser being more advanced. Both use the reflection of it's light source. And determine the temperature from the delay in time to return to the sensor.

I suspect you mean "thermostat."

It is simply a hand held device that allows you to set the desired temperature in a room from the convenience of your Lazi-Boy lounge.
