If you like Chicago you will love Milwaukee. Milwaukee cleaner both appearance wise and politically. Entertainment, sports, first class.Abundant lakes for winter and summer enjoyment. Reasonable rents and home prices.Museum, library, zoo[world class] very good. Five very good universities ,and decent high school in the city, in the suburbans excellent high schools.
As with all metro areas in the USA crime is a problem. City has no more or less than comparable size metro areas.

I personally like Milwaukee. Granted there's been a increase in crime in recent years but overall it's pretty cool. I used to make quick road trips to Milwaukee from Chicago on the weekends just for something different to do. Milwaukee Fest in the summer is great (it beats Chicago's Taste of Chicago by a longshot - better musical acts, more room to walk around, better food), and they have other smaller festivals on the lakefront all summer long. I'd take the beer factory tour; it sounds corny but you get lots of free beer at the end of the tour, which makes it worthwhile. There's a brand new art museum on the lakefront which is actually pretty cool. And I've been to three or four baseball games at Brewers stadium. Unfortunately, everytime I go there the weather isn't too great so I've never been there when the roof was open. There's a cool German villiage area with restaurants and pubs, a casino downtown and a decent shopping mall. Milwaukee gets a bad rap but it's a great blue collar city.

Depends on who you ask, you could start a small war easily. People of Milwaukee just love their city, while people a bit further south just think Milwaukee is a dump. I am not from that part of the world I have have visited Milwaukee 3-4 times on business, I find the people very friendly, the town is clean for a city that size with good beer and good food, what more would you want.

Milwaukee is a small Chicago. The down town really is horrible though. It has been under construction for ever. Not a lot of things to do either. Except go to the lake.
Definitely DIVE!

A nice spot to visit on a weekend. Miller beer has a great tour where at the end of the tour you get to sample 3 of their beers. There is a bar on Front Street called Safehouse. You need a password to get into after 8pm but if you don't know it they won't turn you away and it is spy themed. There is something in the ladies room where a car alarm goes off in the bar if it is touched. Harley Davidson has a factory tour in Milwaukee too.

Improving. It used to be kind of falling apart, and the downtown area was an eyesore. But a few years ago, the Midwest Express Center opened downtown, the new art museum (which is beautiful) arrived, Wisconsin Avenue (one of the main thoroughfares downtown) began sprouting new businesses, and the RiverWalk developed.

It's still not Chicago, and probably will always be in the shadow of nearby Chicago. But it's very friendly, the downtown is improving, and the city is rapidly improving. I don't think it's a dive, not anymore.

I LIVE in Milwaukee and have all of my life. I love it here, and this is where I will always consider home. People are correct when they say it's a mini Chicago, and NO, the crime doesn't stand out more than any other metro area across the U.S. Check out the attached visitors information. Good luck!

Milwaukee is an okay city. It's just like regular big cities, there's alot to do there. Also there's alot of crime. But, all-in-all, I wouldn't be against living there. I enjoy where I live right now, low-crime, very quiet and alot of things to do. I live in IA.
