This month is Black History Month, and if you didn't know I don't blame you. Its come to a point where I don't care nor see the point of it anymore. I'm am wondering why we continue on with this. We get the shortest month of the year and all we hear is about how we suffered during slavery times. Yes, we occasionally get the ones about the strong, black people who have overcomed and went to success but still! I'm not getting anything from this month and if you are, tell me what it is. I want to hear a strong argument against this!

It seems to me that the whole concept of Black History Month is contrary to the goals of the civil rights movement. If Martin Luther King Jr.'s goal was a color blind society, why promote the accomplishments of one race over another?

Instead of focusing on race, I believe we should promote role models of all ages, genders and races.

How can you not know? It's everywhere! Many of the more erudite programs are featuring black people that have done amazing things! The month is barely shorter than any of the others, and if you don't feel there's a point to it, why would you even care about the length of time? I'm honestly surprised about your attitude! Hopefully you won't pass it on to others! Try to have a good time with it, and be glad that it's getting better and that many people are learning something that they may never have if it wasn't for the fact that there is such a thing as Black History Month! I'd be thrilled to have a month!

The point is that you always have the ability to help someone else. There is nothing that can give you a sense of purpose and value more than helping another person. Think of the things you have done in your life to help others. Things that truly made a difference in their life. These are the things that state your value as a person. By focusing on helping yourself and others you answer the question - "what is the point". You may even find somebody coming into your life if your focus is on doing for others.

I'm not black, but I love black history month. Living in Canada, I don't get the info that I would like, but some is better than none...
I just wish that BHM would enlighten some people to think before they act in ignorance or to try to see how black people are still being treated poorly today. I'm sick of hearing how everyone wants a white history month. I'm sick of hearing how black people whine too much (supposedly). I'm all for learning about our differences and our simularities with respect for eachother.
Here in Canada we have Aboriginal Day. I wish it were a month.

I agree, there should be a black history month. I teach all about it in my first grade class. It is a very important part of history.

I've learned about great inventors, famous teachers, lots of people from the past, for whatever reason, I had never heard of them before. It was because of black history month, that I am aware of these great people now.......

empowering doesnt mean bringing others down by blaming suffering on them i feel thats where we become lost...and many become angry..but i am interested in the struggles and triumphs in other cultures besides my own..

You say you're not getting anything from it. What do you have to contribute? Try volunteering or do some organizing and get involved. It will probably give you a whole new perspective on it.
