Something does need to be done about congestion. I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet. If enough people sign the petition the government will back down, after all they wouldn't want to lose the next election would they? Their own political survival matters more than anything to them, even us.
What concerns me more is the idea of tracking our journeys. This is very sinister, far more worrying than charging. This (along with the proposed introduction of I.D. cards) is the biggest threat to the people of this country.

Its just another Tax on families and working people. For years the government have condoned and encouraged shops and facilities to movement to the outskirts of town, planners have set up business parks away from housing forcing you to travel to work and public transport is a joke. In my town there is no manufacturing at all, the big companies are all shut (I'm an Engineer) and now I travel 40 miles each way to earn a living. Road tolls on top of rising fuel and falling wages would mean that very soon working for a living will soon become uneconomical. That's great! Lets tax decent people onto the dole. What then? What will they tax next to pay everybodies dole money?

Although I use public transport, I'd have to agree with you. The transport system is doing nothing to encourage people onto it, since it has put its fares up to a highly unacceptable level & not providing value for money. More & more people use their cars, cos it's convenient, quicker & quite possibly cheaper. To tax the driver off the road without providing an alternative solution is ludicrous. If they're going to charge you for driving on the roads, they could at least provide you with free parking as a compromise.

I totally agree, we are being taxed not once but over and over under different titles. We all pay council tax which I thought covered refuse, but now they are talking about taxing us yet again on how much we put out. As if we can afford to waste anything when our wages seem to be the only thing which never goes up to cover all these extras!

I glimpsed a few answers and saw they were on the global warm-up theme. It may be that we are not making any difference whatsoever to global warming by driving cars. What then?
