i have a 55 gallon. some people say that u need 10xs how many gallons u have, which here equals 550gph. but the renafil star xp3 canister filter has 350gph, but it says its for up to 175 gallon tanks.but people say that this filter works really good and they have like 150 gallon tanks. i don't get it , HELP! what filter should i get? do powerheads accually filter or do they just circulate the water? i was thinking either the renafil star filter xp3 (350gph) or the aquaclear 901 powerhead (935gph) HELP!!! any ideas?

IMO most filters are overrated. They usually say they will filter a certain tank size, but IME that is usually not enough. The reccomended is a GPH 10x the volume of the tank. But you could get away with down to about 6-7x the volume of the tank as long as you are diligent with your water changes.

Personally I like to overfilter, and I use filtration that is rated for at least double the volume of my tanks.

Get the biggest filter you can. I use the Fluval 405 for my similar sized tank. It's a gr8 filter & is easy to maintain. If your tank is freshwater, then you don't need powerheads.

if you are runing the 350 and your water is staying clear, its working just fine, they do filter the water, i would recommend you chging the filter atleast once a month or when you see your water getting foggy
