I asked myself this question too, at one point. =)
The answer is easy. The first 100 years were the first century. Meaning, the next 100 years would have been the second, and so on. That's why the century count is always 1 count ahead of the current century.

What would you call the years 0-100? The zero century? That was the "first" century. The "second" is 100-200. That makes 1000-1100 the "eleventh" and 2000-2100 the "twenty-first".

Its the same thing as your age. your may be 18, because you have completed that many years, but you are really in your 19th year.
