All depends what you're doing with it...
If you're just polishing the flagpole, most anything will do; Crisco, cooking oil, mineral oil.
If you're talking about a woman, you want a non-irritating water based lube.

There is no replacement for Vaseline, it is perfect! I guess if you are desperate, cooking oil or something can do nicely...depends on what it is for...;)
