I've arranged for a bunch of friends and a surprise meal in a local posh hotel - so we can't make a mess or have strippers etc but I'd really like to make it memorable and for her to feel special.

I was going to suggest taking her out for a meal, but surprsing her will be a good way of making it memorable!

I had my 50th back in May, My family arranged a small gathering and traced back some old friends whom i had lost contact with, the Birthday cake was of my favourite football club, and the whole thing was a surprise, it wasn't over the top and it will be a night i will always remember,

Perhaps you could get some old pictures and make a book of her life to date, highlighting memorable moments accompanied by the photo's.

Find out what was the first record she ever bought and ask the hotel to play it at an appropriate time,

Make her centre of attraction, make her feel special, 50 is a landmark in our lives and should hold special memories,

Try the friends reunited web site and try to contact some old school friends,

I'm sure she will have a great night & good luck

Get her a gift certificate for a massage. The whole pampering deal with it.
Take her and get a pix made of just the two of you at a studio.
Write her a letter, telling her how special she is to you and reminise about old times you two had together.
Buy her a best friend necklace, you wear 1/2 and her the other 1/2..
If you have a cable channel, put an announcement on it to run for a few days for her birthday and also include just how special she is.
Do you have time to make her a scrapbook of pictures of the two of you growing up together? Those are really popular and something to keep forever. Include pix of her family too...

Tell her Karen wishes her the best birthday ever... Blessings~

Clean and sensible...now where's the fun in that?

Maybe you could arrange to have an old friend she hasn't seen in some time come in for the dinner.

Or perhaps a rousing chorus of her favorite song? If the people attending can't sing, you could hire someone...

On that same note, if you are any good at poetry, or public speaking, a well thought out toast could do the trick.

I think throwing the party shows enough that you care. I bet she's glad to have a sibling like you. My brother and I are very close, and it's good to know that other people share the same special relationship we do.

Happy birthday to your sister!

Since you have already done the one thing that I would have suggested that you NOT do for a womans 50th Birthday, then why not just top it off with the next best offensive thing you could do to her in a Public Place...Fresh Flowers delivered via signing telegram at her table. That should be enough attention to put her in the ER or wish she had a way of escaping. Seriously, unless your Sister has a very extroverted personality, you should not do things like this because the big 50 is a time of depression for many women. I'm almost 54 & I was a no-show for my big 50 & I don't regret it. I hope you know your sister well enough to pull this off in a way that will not make you public enemy #1 !!!

The surprise should do it. But you could ask the hotel if they can provide a small cake at the end of the meal, or some special flowers for the table. Possibly a strolling violinist could be arranged for, if your budget runs to that sort of thing.

My sister's 50 in April too, my bro-in-law is hiring a hall for a surprise party so all the family can attend. We have the same problem as the family is quite religious and she won't like male strippers.
