Most definitely exaggerated.

Since you've asked your question in the pet section, I'm going to assume you are referring to pet rats. I've never bred mice so I can't give you any info on them.

Rats of both sexes can become sexually active at 6 weeks of age.

Female rats come into heat every 4 to 5 days and stay in heat for 12 hours, usually breeding at night.

The female can become pregnant again within hours after giving birth.

Litter size can be anywhere from 4 to 23 pups, with the average being 8 to12. Although my breeding average has been more like 7 to 9 pups in a litter.

Average breeding age of a female is 6 weeks to 18 months with the estrogen level dropping off after 18 months.

Ethical breeders will breed the female starting at 3 months of age and stop breeding her around 9 months to a year, breeding only once a year to give her a break between litters. Personally I only breed a girl once in her lifetime.

Now, if ya did something really dumb and left the males and females together for life, you would have the females breeding with their male relatives..........then you might get close to a couple thousand offspring.

a rodent can have 10-20 babies who mature in 2-4 months. average of 12 babies (normally) half are female, they produce 12 each (72) babies half female 36 more females, 12 each in about 3 months 432 babies in about 5 months...and so on and so on...and that is only counting the new females giving birth, not to mention the second, third and so on litters from the previous mommies

every 2 months a mature rat/mouse cna mate, then after 3 weeks, they have their babies, then they can get pregnant the next day
