A cereal box ia 7.4 in. wide, 9.6 in high, and 2.5 in. deep. How many square inches of cardboard are needed to make this box?

This is a surface area problem. Thanks!

The formula I need to use is surface area=ph + 2b, where p=perimeter of base, h=height, and b=area of a base.

Two sides are 7.4 x 9.6
Two sides are 9.6 x 2.5
Two sides are 2.5 x 7.4

2 x 7.4 x 9.6 = 142.08
2 x 9.6 x 2.5 = 48
2 x 2.5 x 7.4 = 37

142.08 + 48 + 37 = 227.08 square inches

Work it out. Won't help you to learn if you get the answer here.
You have 2 large sides 7.4 wide x 9.6 high = +
2 small sides 2.5 wide x 9.6 high = +
2 ends 2.5 wide x 7.4 wide = +
Now add them up to get the total =

Ok. You know that there are four sides of a cereal box. Two sides (let's call them Side A) are 7.4 x 9.6. You know that the other two sides (let's call them Side b) are 9.6 x 2.5. Figure out the surface area of one Side A. Multiply that by two. Figure out the surface are of one Side B. Multiply that by two. Then, add the two figures together.

BTW, surface area is height multiplied by width or height multiplied by depth in this case.

2 * 7.4 *9.6 = 142.08
2 * 9.6 *2.5 = 48
2*2.5 * 7.4 = 37
142.08+48+37=227.08
