Why, yes, I am. I like anything with a G to PG-13 rating. Art, religion, history, philosphy, genealogy, whatever. Reading is a good thing and books can be very beautiful. Also, the topic of the book ususally reveals a little of the personality of its owner.

More impressed by books sitting around as if they are actually being read

no because that big good looking book might be a very stupid book(i DO have a few in mind which i shall not mention).
besides, just having the big book doesn't mean their are necessarily reading it.
books that aim to teach you something valuable, or classic novels usually look pretty good.

No, that happened to me once and I asked if the book was good. The response was oh this thing I have read it so many times. The book was new and in the bag. So no.....

A linguist book, anything by Tom Clancy, or even a history book.

Not really impressed. It's just an object...and you are just a person who has that object. Things don't impress me...people do...

Yup. It makes me think that this person has more than half a brain. A good mystery sounds good to me

Not really. Maybe if the person is reading it...or makes a comment on it. Otherwise, no. Even a mentally retarded can keep a big book near him/her but it doesn't mean he/she is smart.

Not impressed at all - it was probably put there to impress - the person in question probably can't even read!!!!

Not generally, however, if it were Moby Dick or some old classic like that I wouldn't really be impressed more, connected to the person reading it. (if they read it.)
