Sphinx is an iconic image of a recumbent lion with the head of a ram, of a falcon or of a person, invented by the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom, but a cultural import in Greek mythology.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a large half-human, half-lion Sphinx statue in Egypt, on the Giza Plateau at the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo (29.975299° N 31.137496° E). It is one of the largest single-stone statues on Earth, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC.
The inscription on a stele in the Great Sphinx dates it from one thousand years after the carving of the Sphinx, gives three names of the sun: Kheperi - Re - Atum. The Arabic name of the Great Sphinx, Abu al-Hôl, translates as "Father of Terror". The Greek name "Sphinx" was applied to it in the Antiquity. But it has the head of a man, not of a woman.

The Sphinx is a woman in the Oedipus story.
It's an ancient Egyptian symbol, but it was popular around the ancient world.
It symbolizes great strength and courage (lion) and wisdom (human head.) Chimeras are mixes of animals to get a combination that symbolizes all the characteristics of the different parts.
Like, a human with goat legs (such as Pan, the Greek god) would be somewhat civilized, but very lusty and naughty. Chimeras blend the best (or worst) of a few different creatures.

Sphinx is an iconic image of a recumbent lion with the head of a ram, of a falcon or of a person, invented by the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom, but a cultural import in Greek mythology. Seen as guardians in the Egyptian statuary, sphinxes are depicted in one of these three forms:
Androsphinx - body of lion with head of person;
Criosphinx - body of lion with head of ram;
Hierocosphinx - body of lion with head of falcon or hawk.
The largest and most famous is the Great Sphinx of Giza, sited on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, facing due east, with a small temple between its paws. The face of the Great Sphinx is believed to be the head of the pharaoh Khafra (often known by the Greek version of his name, Chephren) or possibly that of his brother, the Pharaoh Djedefra, which would date its construction from the fourth dynasty (2723 BC–2563 BC).
that should give you a general idea about the sphinx. if you want to read more i have provided you with the link.

I don't the Sphinx's age, but it was built by a Pharoah. The statue is a mythological character that guards treasures; it asks a riddle of the person seeking its treasures; the riddle is this: what starts on 4 goes to 2 and ends on 3; if the person gets it wrong, the sphinx eats them; if they get it right - the sphinx will burst into flames and die.

The Spinx symbolizes the Pharaoh. The Pharaohs face and the body of a lion was to keep any disturbence to the "afterlife" that the egyptians belived in. The Head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion represents great power because in the aincent Egyptian times, Lions where known as most powerful animals. The Pyramids werent that graeat to the tombs but it stands as a great monument representing Egypt. The pyramid was a horrible to put a tomb in because the "Grave robbers" would steal their jewlery. The Egyptians put food, jewlery, and etc. that they would need for the "afterlife". Then Egyptians placed the Tombs in Valley of the Kings and Valley of the kings. Still all the tombs where all touched except one that was found un-touched.

some crazy person theorized that the son's of God (nephilim: genesis 6:3) actually mixed animal DNA with human DNA and the statues you see in Eygpt are some of the examples of what they came out to be. That might answer question two and three and maybe one.
