Yes to all the above and one more suggestion: pull the coil wire if it has one, or pull the distributor cap. With a strong battery, engage the starter in 1 to 2 second bursts several times. Any strange noises will indicate a problem before damage occurs. All OK? Crank the engine for 4 or 5 twenty second shots to and see that you have oil pressure indicating. Reconnect the distributor and fire it up. Rattling noise?? Shut down and investigate.

Just look for gasket leaks, change the tranny filter asap, change oil an filter, expect fuel filter clogs, a good possibility. It also may take a while for rings to reseal, so you might get oil smoke comming out the exhaust, check the tires if your gonna drive it back to where you live. If you have gasket leaks though, just check fluids often if your not trailering it, and if driving back, go ahead and have the radiator flushed. It would be best to take it to jiffy lube and let them do as much as possible. Pack tools an a timing light too.
Plugs and plug wires, and draining gas will be good as mentioned above.

All the advice you have received is good, but I would like to add a personal experience, and that is to make sure you don't have any stuck valves. Often a valve that is open to the exhaust system might just pick up a little corrosion, and seize, causing some damage when you turn over the engine. My advice is to remove the valve covers, and make sure your valves are freely working. Good luck.

did it have fuel stabilizer? did it have the oil drained? If not, drain the oil and fuel immediately and refill with fresh. If not, you are going to have problems (hell, you may still have problems, but this will cut down on some).

it might not hurt to drain the gas and put in fresh. There could be carb. problems because of the fuel but i could be wrong.
