Okay, so well. I'm new at dance classes. And I love it. But everyone tells me to put emotion and feeling into it. I just don't understand! How do I do that? I can't smile while I do hip-hop dancing. But I don't want to look drab either. How do you do it?

I would agree with the smiling during hip hop because it can get cheesy and doesn't fit with the music. I usually listen to the song and get the feel for it and the vibe it gives me. If you have these hard hitting beats try to figure out what the beats would look like expressed on your face and when you can use lots of face and at other times keep it controlled. I really agree with dancing outside of your comfort zone because you will find a new you that has always been there but you haven't been able to express before and the only way to express it is through your emotion in dance. Think of yourself as a blank canvas at first but when the music comes on you are an artist coloring that canvas.

In dance, every move has an intention. It's just like a language. Try to think what goes through your head when you're dancing. If it is "right, left, right, now point your foot, hold, left, right..." and stuff like that then no wonder you don't project any emotion. Try to go through your routine and think what every move is supposed to mean. For example, if you are pointing yuor finger at the audience, think "YOU". If you are extending your arms also think what it means: "me" or the "whole world" can both be shown by extending your arms but in slightly different ways. Look at yourself in the mirror - you will see. And I'm sure you can smile at some moments, not the whole time though. I hope I helped.

when you dance with your heart people will know the difference then if you were just dancing... you have to do it with emotion it makes it so much more realistic. here is what you can do. you need to relax and not just think about the next step but just flow into it.
have you heard of modern dancing...?? well this is the perfect example of dancing with emotion because thats the whole idea of it... u should check it out one day... it might seem pretty weird at first because its not just the same 8 count that you are used to. its really different and very emotional.... try it out and let me know how it went..
good luck

Look like you're enjoying it and also, dance TO and WITH the music. I know that sounds sorta odd, but that's what you need to do. For instance, depending on the mood of the song, depends on how you dance. Like my dance team danced to "Ain't No Other Man" by Christina Aguilera this year. They also danced to "Let's Get It Started". Ain't No other man has a different feel to it. More sexy. Let's get it started, more sporty. I dunno, just listen and dance. Look into the mirror (or audience...whichever) too. If you look down, you look like you don't know it. And yes, you can smile. You just have to do it in the correct times.

my dance teacher says to play the music in your room and stand infront of the mirror and make up faces that go with your dance. then pick a few that you will do onstage or when you perform

like my dance teacher always tells me... dance outside your box... pretend you have this box around you... and you want do things outside of your box.. do things that you normally wouldn't do... show faces... get into the music and dance a little more... accentuate your moves... and stretch your body... how this helps!
