The movie is a fairly accurate representation of the Cuban Missile Crisis. As to large things:

- Personnel: All of the people in the film were members of the Kennedy administration, and the relationships between Kennedy and the staff were accurate.

- Actual Events
1. The cabinet meetings in which Robert Kennedy was the voice of reason.
2. The meeting with the Russian ambassador did take place
3. Kruschev did send a message, known as the "knot of war" message which led Kennedy to believe he wanted peace
4. A jet fighter did overfly Cuba and was almost shot down
