i would listen to the book you have. although i have had a few hamsters when i was a kid and i would leave them in the balls for quite a while and they seemed to like it. Just dont leave them alone as i had one break open the ball and he escaped into my walls where he lived for a couple weeks until we found where he was sleeping and cut a hole in the wall to get him out.
as for the gnawing at the cage i have never had a hamster not do it. i think it is normal for them to be trying to escape.
once they figure out a way to escape they will continue to do it, they are actually pretty clever so make sure you stay on top of any cage repair you might have to do.
GOOD LUCK!!

For an 8 year old I would say a teddy bear or fancy hamster there real name is a Syrian hamster. They are bigger than the dwarfs and are more timid. The dwarfs are great but they tend to be high strung. Plus the Syrian hamsters have a life span that can be up to 8 years. The oldest I've ever had was 4. Both male and female hamsters are good pets. I've just always had more luck with the girls being more laid back.

He is not bored. Hamsters are born to run. He can stay in the ball for 15-20 minutes, if he stays in there for a half-hour he could get dehydrated. Just make sure you supervise him!! Good Luck with your hammy!!!

don`t let your hamster run, until he stops, even though he keeps running, he may over do himself. Let him run 15-30 min. after that, if her knaws at the bars, he is filing his teeth down. My hamster did that all the time, when we first got him, but we got a chew house, and he never does it anymore

she will run on her wheel for two hours straight,i timed her one day.
when she is in her ball, she has fun,she will get that ball rolling a warp speed,my cats will fallow the ball, but if she rolls in their direction the cats run, then fallow her again then she chases them again they have made a game of it.

It's because he doesn't like being in a cage probably, let alone some plastic sphere that he can never get out of. He's probably going mad; wouldn't we all...

If he was having fun in there, put him back in. Don't leave him in for longer than a half hour though, and no more than three times a day.
