Hi

I'm assuming your Terrano is the turbo diesel model.

Contrary to what was said above, white smoke is NOT oil, it is AIR. BLUE smoke is either OIL or DIESEL, diesel being a heavy oil.

The first thing you should do is to prime the fuel system before you perform a cold start to eliminate air ingression.

You should then move onto checking the engine management coolant sensor, which could be causing a cold start and cold running problem.

There is a chance that if it is not illuminated now, the engine management light could have been illuminated, and this will mean that a fault code or a collection of fault codes could be stored which may point you in the right direction.

There are other engine sensors to be checked but unless you are mechanically minded then you should entrust it to a pro or a competant DIY mechanic.

Cheers

Geordie

Black smoke is gasoline, white smoke is oil.

If you have grey smoke, only you know if it's light grey or dark grey.

If your engine is a high-mileage unit, you could be getting a little oil into the chamber overnight past some hard old valve seals and it burns white or light grey.

Black or Dark grey is a cold fuel delivery problem. Every car has some kind of whoop-dee-doo to get more gas into the intake because cars need more gas before they warm up to operating temperature.

I'm old school and still drive a carbureted car with a choke. If it were my car, I'd just bend & flex my choke linkage until it moved freely. Your car, God who knows, piss on the wires, maybe that will make it think it's warmed up.

Is it petrol or diesel If it is diesel then your smoke is unburnt diesel in vapour form. If you have glow plugs to help the engine start then they should be checked to see if any have burnt out also your injectors need to be tested by a diesel recon firm. What is happening is that the engine will not ignite the fuel properly until the engine is hot enough so it is not running properly on all cylinders White smoke is water vapour blue smoke is burnt oil

An engine emits smoke can mean that it is badly tuned. If there is white/grey smoke, it is under-combustion, meaning that the engine is not using all the petrol fed to you and emitting the unspend smoke as white smoke. Have the engine tuned up should resolve the problem.
