its giving them a false sense of true beauty. they also learn to say what other people will want to hear instead of speaking their minds and they also have too much pressure put on them which is devastating when they lose making them feel as though they arent good enough.

If you and your child are in pageants for the right reasons, I can't think of any cons other than scheduling issues with other events.
It's nice to feel like a princess sometimes. :-) We do pageants for fun. She also knows that if she doesn't win the pageant, it doesn't mean she isn't beautiful. She wins just by doing her best and she's aware of that.
So many people are against pageantry, I think they just don't understand or haven't been to the right pageants. We love pageantry. My daughter is 4 and holds a couple national and state titles. Her face lights up the second her foot hits that stage.
She is learning that responsibility to the community comes with these titles. We do book drives, can food drives, fund-raisers and adopted Angel Tree chidren as part of her "service projects." She is learning how to volunteer now to help others, and if she likes doing that with a crown on her little head, let her. She has learned sportsmanship and how to take turns. She's learned to be happy for others. She has won some bonds, which are in savings for college.
Yes, there are those that take pageantry to the extreme, and those are the people "Little Miss Sunshine" spoofed. I laughed my tail off during that movie! The "pageant moms" you see on Maury and Jerry Springer are not the true pageant moms. They are probably the worst possible examples.

If a parent is forcing a child to be in it, then I think that it is not doing right by the child. There are many women that force their childen into these pageants.
However, many children choose to be in these pageants and I see no harm in allowing it if they want to do it. My daughter loves it and as long as she enjoys it, I will let her do it.

-Being pampered all the time may cause them to be self-absorbed and having an inflated/unrealisted sense of self.
-made fun of/teased by other kids
-being judge constantly based on your appearance cannot be good for their mental health or physical health
-competing with other girls based on looks is not gonna get them friends
-their parents often get caught up in the pageant and winning=not good parenting
-They may end up like Tara Conner or Miss Nevada.
-creepy stalkers
-false sense of reality
-may be more likely to develop eating disorders
i could go on and on. I can't really think of any pros.

Possibly get used to the enivornment of trying to be perfect, and basically learning how to. May take it outside of the pageant, and seem fake to others.

shows them that beauty is the only way to go
shows them that you need to be beautiful to win
shows that they need to strive to be beautiful and then some of them lose (thats so sad)
Rent the Movie Little Miss Sunshine. I like Olive (Abigail Breslin) best because she is the only natural one and she is the best! (Movie not appropriate for young children)
