What do you mean by small? Length? I'd recommend a ball python then. They only grow to about three feet and unlike the snakes you mentioned aren't very fast moving. They are easy to care for and can be handled very easily.

I disagree with the people that said for you to get a ball python. They are docile, but females have a potential of getting 5-6 feet, and are very thick-bodied snakes. I have kept rosy boas for years, and they are great first time snakes, come in a variety of colors, and are never problem feeders. Sand boas are good too, although they spend a lot of time buried in the sand or wood chips in the bottom of the cage. If you want something small and nice, you could also take a look at arizona mountain kingsnakes, nelson's milksnakes, western hognose snakes, or african house snakes. All of them stay around 4 feet or less, have gentle temperaments, and are great first snakes. I have a few of each kind, and they are wonderful snakes. Definitely do some research on each species specific care before jumping in. Good luck, and welcome to the hobby!

If you are sure you want either a sand boa or rosy boa, I would go with the sand boa. They are very easy to maintain, they do not need large amounts of humidity like some other snakes, cleaning the cage is as easy as sifting sand, and they are very docile (most of the time). When it comes time to feed mine, I just put them in plastic coffee cans with their food for a couple of hours (holes poked in the lids of course). Actually they are the easiest of the snakes I have to take care of.

I love snakes and have had a few different kinds. For a first time owner I'd suggest a king snake (many kinds and colors) for temperment and ease of feeding and care. Don't expect every snake to be the same in temperment, each one will act different depending on how use to humans it is. My second choice for temperment alone would be a ball python (royal python), look for the one that scruches up into a ball and hides it's head when picked up, if it strikes at you it's not the personality you are looking for as a first time owner. Balls are very good tempered usually and will slowly come out of the protective ball and check stuff out in a few minutes. They do tend to be picky eaters some times though.
Always feed the snakes in a seperate tank so they never associate you reaching in their cage with maybe getting food. (can use tub with the plug in, or large plastic bin) Read as much as you can on which ever type you want to get before hand and be sure to look at a few snakes of that type before you get one, so you get a feel for which is the better tempered animal.

Corn snakes are awesome first snakes-and unlike balls, are not picky eaters. We call one of my corns 'the Jesus snake ' because she is so sweet that everyone just loves her whether they like snakes or not. Take some time and pick out a healthy snake that has a personality that you like-snakes do have personality and anyone who tries to rush you through the selection process does not deserve your money. Good luck.

I had a boa once. Not sure what kind, but it did not live in sand/bury itself. LOL It was good-natured, though. Gotta be careful when feeding live mice. I accidentally got bit once while trying to drop little mousy in the cage. Snake was HUNGRY!

I would get a corn snake they are small ( average is 3-4 feet, 5 feet max). they come in many different colors. They are easily tamed and good if its your first pet snake. King snakes are good also

I would recomend get a Anaconda. They are very short and are just like the Cobra, great with kids and pets and they also are fun to play and sleep with.
