Lennie being mentally handicapped, and George being a "normal person" and why it turns out the way it does in the end. How their relationship is like a father, son, or best friends, etc...

I think that in the end, since George was always Lennie's only real influence and guidance, George felt that not only had he let his friend down by allowing him do such a terrible thing, but that it was his responsibility to take care of it. He knew that Lennie would have to be punished sooner or later, and he also knew that what he did would be a much better end for Lennie than being caught and torn apart by an angry mob.

I feel that George was like a parent to Lennie. He watched over him and tried to protect Lennie. He knew Lennie wasn't normal.
