I would like to read Fantasy books, a friend of mine tells me that the Forgotten Realms are good titles to read.
Just wondered if there's a starting point to these books, or could anyone recomend me one.

RA Salvatore is widely considered the best FR writer, for his books about Drizzt (a dual-scimitar-wielding good drow - the drow being a race of underground-dwelling dark elves who are normally evil - trying to make his way in a hostile world). As for what to read first, try the Dark Elf trilogy or the Cleric Quintet.

There is a timeline somewhere, an internet search might turn it up if you're really interested, but honestly with the sheer number of FR books out there - and they were not written in timeline order - you are better off picking and choosing according to the quality of each individual book rather than trying to start at the beginning.

I don't think any of the FR books are masterpieces, frankly. Do you play D&D? If yes then they're worth reading just for the background and immersion in the world that you're playing in. It's nice to be reading a book and think "Oh, I've BEEN there!" (even if it's only fantasy).

If not, I would try something a bit less pulpy in the fantasy genre. There was a good thread on here the other day which had all the classics listed out together with reasons why they were good and what type of reader they would appeal to.

Totally off-topic, if you don't already play Dungeons and Dragons and you and your friends like the FR novels, then give it a try. Much better than just reading about it.

I read the novels before playing in the forgotten relams. I found the drizzt dourden books the easiest way in. The initial trilogy is a really good start and ealt with a setting completly unique in fqantasy at the time (the first book depicted a fascinating world where everyone is evil as a matter of course while keeping it readiable and charming!)
otherwiswe I aould recomend I zstrahd which is an offshout in ravenloft and follows a diary format thats easy to follow.

I have read a few but was not impressed at all apart from by the first two or three books about Drest the Drow.
If you like fantasy books read "Magician" by Raymond E. Feist. It is an exceptional novel.

i can no longer help you with Forgotten Realm, besides the undeniable fact that the order for Dragonlance (important sequence, there are a number of of, yet those are the important ones through Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman) is: Dragons of Autumn Twilight Dragons of iciness evening Dragons of Spring Dawning Time of the Twins conflict of the Twins attempt of the Twins Then some thoughts i did not study/study: Magic of Krynn Kender, Gully Dwarves & Gnomes Love and conflict The Reign of Istar The Cataclysm The conflict of the Lance Dragons of Krynn Then again to the important sequence that I study: the second one era Dragons of summer Flame Dragons of a Fallen solar Dragons of a lost superstar Dragons of a Vanished Moon And yeah, like I suggested, there are a number of of through many diverse authors. Weis has some through herself and with others that i did not like as a lot...I stuck to the Weis and Hickman books. delight in.
