There is no such thing as a "gun handling license" in the USA. The only "licenses" we are required to have are annual hunting licenses when we desire to hunt birds and animals for which our states have seasons and bag limits. You do not need a hunting license to own a gun or to shoot a gun. ONLY to hunt with a gun. The only other similar regulation applies to having a "permit" for a concealed carry weapon which does not allow you to buy or own a gun, or even to hunt with it. It ONLY allows you to carry it on your person or in your vehicle in a concealed manner. That's it! So IF you own a gun, be it rifle, shotgun, or handgun, you may take it to the range for target shooting. There, you will be subject to the rules set forth by the range officials. They will not ask to see a license or a permit. Have fun!

Hi,

the law requires that you have a licence to own and carry a gun, not to shoot one.

I don't know the Chicago area well, but a look through the 'phone book should find you a list of target shooting clubs in the area. Your wife would be made welcome and would be able to both learn (safely) and actually shoot while there.

If your wife wishes to own a gun at any point (preferably after learning how to shoot it, and not before!) then she will need to apply for a licence and apply at the local gun store, who will forward her application to the police for suitability checks, etc. Until then she will be able to quite legally shoot as often as she likes while on the shooting range.

Good luck (and keep your head down!)

You need to present an FOID card to shoot at any Chicago range. They ask for it at the range. I know, I have been to the gun ranges and own one. You can call any gun range and find out for sure, but the ones that I have been to ask for a FOID card. Firearms owner identification. Not sure if you can rent a gun.

hope this helps

Not sure if you could rent one at this range, but I have been to Chuck's Dolton Gun shop (which is actually in Riverdale, if I remember correctly). You don't need a license. There are a few others which should be listed in the phone book.

You wife doesn't need a license to shoot a gun, but in most places she needs to register it. There used to be a rifle range in the Fort Sherridan, Ill. area but I dont know if it is still open.

Chicago is worse then Nazi Germany, they don't recognise the 2nd Amendment or other freedoms.
