I have an old Toro Snow Pup snowblower that requires oil/gas mixture. It states that you should use SAE 30 oil, but I've been told two cycle engine oil is better. Is that correct?

You can use either, but be sure that the viscosity is 30 SAE. The 2-stroke doesn't use most of the chemical additive package, as it would be burned in the combustion process.
Be very sure to mix the EXACT ratio for that motor, and not some generic, or "that's close enough" blend.
Keep the fuel mix fresh, and when the season is over, remove all of the fuel from the tank and run the rest out of the carburetor.

Happy Motoring

How old is the snow blower? I would usually say to go with what the manufacturer recommends. That being said, I had a 1960 Evinrude outboard engine in the late 1980's. They recommended SAE30 but I used 2 cycle oil and it was fine. I think it was so old it pre-dated 50:1 2 cycle oil.

where does it say to put the oil sae 30 is a crank case motor oil not a mix you may have an injected 2 cycle commonly used on snowmobiles not snowblowers if its 2 cycle you mix you need 2 cycle oil mixed to the proper ratio check the motor for a fill and drain plug if it has a crank case with an oil galley its not 2 cycle

In my opinion the two cycle oil would be better, most two cycle engines use a pre-mix, and some two cycle engines have an oil tank which mixes the oil with the gas as it is used.

back when the toro was built 30 w was ok...its probably better to use a modern oil. In 1968 i used 30w in my outboard motor...I wouldn't now.
