I'm surprised to have not seen Jere Lehtinen's name come up seeing as how he has recieved the Selke Trophy 3 times, which is tied for second all time (tied with Bob Gainey and one behind Guy Carbonneau). That being said he has also passed the 30 goal mark in each season he has played in 80+ games, and the 20 goal mark in every season over 70 games.

Even though Carbonneau has more Selke Trophies, Lehtinen was more efficient in the offensive zone tallying better numbers through his career

In regards to John Madden, yes he is a great defensive minded forward he averages roughly .412 ppg, whereas Lehtinen averages .602 ppg.

In conclusion, more PPG then the other players mentioned (except Forsberg... who hasn't recieved the Selke Award) & more Selke Awards then any other player in the NHL (except Guy Carbonneau who wasn't as gifted offensively), the best two way player in the game is Jere Lehtinen

Jarome Iginla. He asked for the BEST 2-way player (not Vermete). He doesn't even play on the number one line for one of the worst Defensive teams in the leauge. Liles makes no sense either, because you could take 10 defensemen easily over him for being a good 2-way player. Lidstrom is the correct answer if you want to take a defensemen. Iginla has 59 points this year missing 11 games, playing with a team known for a lack of offense, fights (unlike Lidstrom), and he is still known for being definsive minded.
P.S. I'm not a flames fan.

i'm gonna back up the other person and say john madden. he is the best defensive-forward in the league. i cant beleive he hasnt won the selke trophey more than once.
he has the skill to score plenty of goals aswell as come rushing back to help out the defense. Since i play defense, i love it when forwards come back and help.
He is amazing on face-offs, i remember two games ago he won 70 percent of the ones he took.
he is also tough and consistent. the other day he deflected a shot into his own face by accident and was out for 6 minutes before he came back. they couldnt stop his nose bleed so they hd to clog a nostrel while he played, making it very hard for him to breathe, but he didnt care.
John Madden is the best two-way player in the league.

Niklas Lidstrom.

He plays the toughest position already as a defenseman but also has awesome offensive awareness. His plus/minus rating is always superb, he's won the Norris trophey numerous times, and he single handedly cover one side of the ice against top lines most of the time. On offense, he mans the point on the PP, has an awesome shot, exceptional skating ability and using this season as example, he's leader in PP goals for the Wings, top points in league for dmen, and is just 30 points from the leader overall. Not to mention, he does this while spending nearly 28 minutes on the ice every game.

A guy like Antoine Vermette is very overlooked. Maybe not the best, but deserves more recognition than he's getting. Daniel Alfredsson has got to be in the Top 10 (and I'm not even a big Alfie supporter).

I still think it's Peter Forsberg. He's on a terrible team and he still isnt' in a negative plus minus. He's still dominant on O and when he's on the ice he's constantly back checking and playing well his own zone. I don't think you can pick a defenseman for a two way player. Peace and I'm out!

Not Sidney Crosby! John Madden and Peter Forsberg are the best and most reasonable answer.
