The "1 gallon = 1 inch of fish" guideline DOES NOT apply to goldfish. A one-inch goldfish needs at least 10 gallons.

And you need to research what fish are compatible with what you have before you get more. You are already iffy on that score. Fish are living creatures, and they don't all get along. Almost any fish is a potential meal for almost any other fish, if the size/temperament difference is great enough.

well first of all, goldfish should be in coldwater, kissy fish, im assuming you mean kissing gouramis, need warm water, and there are many different kinds of sucky fish, a few of which will mjaorly outgrow the 42 gallon like a common pleco, and if its a cory you need more than one

they could, however they are not compatible tank mates. 1 inch of fish per gallon is a VERY basic guide line for beginners. How many fish depends on the bio-max capacity which is dependant on amount and type of filtration, type and size of fish, number of fish, maintenance schedule... lots of things.

I would leave the catfish (probably a common pleco) with the goldfish, if he/she is under 4 inches, get him/her a goldie friend and leave them to it. Move everything else to a properly heated tropical tank and establish a community.
