My boyfriend and I just became engaged. He is not legally divorced yet but has been separated for 5 years from his ex. We are so excited and know that we cannot set a date but can we at least advertise in the paper that we are engaged?

well to answer one of the replies, the paper work is getting done up as we speak. They are both hoping to finalize things next month when they have to meet up with their lawyers again. I have been in contact with his ex and they have both moved on (so to speak).

Hold on there! If he's not legally divorced yet, I wouldn't be making any plans just yet including announcing it. I say this because he's NOT divorced yet. Do you know when he's going to have the papers signed or if the paperwork has even been filed yet? People who know him and know he's divorced will ask all kinds of questions if you announce your engagement in the paper. Honestly, being seperated does not mean divorce and just keeps things open between people. I don't mean to sound negative about your situation, but I'm looking at the facts. Start asking questions as far as when they plan on filing and how long it may take? How long have you guys been together? How long has he been telling you it's "over"? If he gets offensive or can't answer your questions; you may want to rethink things. There's nothing worse than waiting for someone who will never be officially available. Good luck and best wishes =)

It would wait on making the official newspaper announcement until after his divorce is final. If he's not completely divorced yet things could get rough if the marital break-up was bad... I do say congrats on being engaged tho... I wish you the best of luck !!

What is his problem? Separated 5 years is sick. Get over it already. BTW, engaged is not a legal standing, you can get engaged to as many people as you want whenever you want and publish that in any manner you want.

You Fool.

And I say this not out of spite, but out of wisdom and being in the same situation. Why isn't he divorced yet after 5 years? Why would you SAY YES to a man who isn't lawfully available.

Damn. Why are women so stupid. And then we wonder why men treat us some of the ways we do.

Uh, no you can't advertise, unless this is going to be a smoothe divorce for him. Legally he is still married. This is called Adultry.

Well I wouldn't. He is not legally divorced yet. I don't care how long he has been seperated, until he is divorced, he is still married.

um...no. He should have his divorce taken care of and then its not tacky to advertise the engagement.
