i've been noticing that many of my fish are dying in just a few weeks. new fish! not old! could it be that the batch was messed up because petco sucks? or is it because im spraying air cleaner (like the stuff that makes your room smell nice) in my room? (my dog is in there alot ^_^)
now, i've had fish my whole life, so i know when to change any water and how much to feed them. it cant be an illness either because fish have died in each of my 3 tanks!
i have 1 tank, a small tank, and a goldfish bowl. fish have been dying in all of them. (tanks are like with the big filters and heaters and all that fancy stuff. the bowl is just a bowl for 2 cool looking goldfish. well, not anymore... THEY DIED.)
most of the fish that i got in one day have all died but 2. i HAD 9!

Yes, you are right. The spray is most likey what is killing the fish. I bet if you quit using it for a week or two you would see that your not still lossing fish.

Airfreshners should never be sprayed in a room where a tank is kept. The oil residue do and will mix with the water.
However, that may or may not be why your fish are dieing.
What is your water quality to start with? Temperature?
Where have you been buying your fish? If you purchased them all from the same source (such as walmart) and they keep dieing....find a new source. These are unhealthy fish when you get them.
Also, do not clean your glass with window cleaner. A soft rag and water will work fine.
PS also remember the freshners in vacuums the powder ones, also toss off dust particles into the air which are basically chemicals. Get rid of them as well.

Air cleaning sprays are definately a problem for fish - they get pulled in through the air pump and put straight into the water, so while your filters are working to take impurities out of the water the air pump is shoving them back in.
Try using a plug in freshener away from the tank or some liquid stuff that you can put down on the floor without it going into the air.
I suppose there could be a problem with the shop where you got the new fish - my friend had that happen, she took all the dead ones back in a bag and they gave her replacements but they died too - eventually she just went to a different shop and the fish from the new shop were fine.

It's hard to tell. It could be that the fish aren't very healthy (like the kind you can get at Wal-mart). But, I wouldn't doubt that the air freshener could be the culprit. Go with out spraying it for a while and see how your fish do. I never spray air freshener, because I researched the effects the chemicals can have on your lungs. I'm sure it's not any healthier for the fish.

I have read that it is definitely not good to use body sprays, hair sprays, or to spray air fresheners any where near your tank. It could be contaminating their water. Something you can try that I find works really well for air freshener are this little 99cent things you can find on the air freshener aisle. They look like cylinders and you twist the cap up to the amount of *freshness* you want lol. I used to keep my cat and his litterbox and food bowl in my room, and these things worked like miracles. *i wish i could remember the name right now hun, but i will get back to you with that*

well I'd say the air freshener is definitely part of the cause, but the goldfish probably died from being over crowded. goldfish are too big and too dirty for bowls, not fish should really be in a bowl but certainly not a goldfish.
fancy goldfish need 10gallons to themselves when young and 20gallons to themselves when adults, and ten more gallons for every goldfish you put with it. commons need to be in a pond. so even if you had two young fancy goldfish the minimal amount of water they should be in is 10gallons, twenty gallons would be even better.
be more careful when spraying cleaning supplies, try a candle instead. and get your next goldfish a bigger tank.

it might be the spray. try going with out the spray for awhile and get an plug in air freshener or just spray at the farthest part from the fish(spray as far as possible from the fish)
good luck

Did you let them get used to the change in water? It very well could be the spray that is killing them as well. That stuff is not good for any animals, or humans for that matter. if you want your room to smell nice, get a carpet vacuum poweder or a plug in. sprays can land in the water and disrupt the ph balances in the tanks water.

if they sray falls into the water then yes for it does not stay in the air only the scent does. spray can shoot out a long way. a small animal like that does not need alot to get killed
