Agree with me or disagree but I think that the talent of Johnny Marr is far outweighed by Andy Rourke's talent. For me as a bassist, it is too easy to forget the brilliant funk and slap bass techniques that Rourke brought to the band as well as providing an important part of the music (the bass!) The problem is that, for me at least, Rourke's contribution to the music was often forgotten by Marr and by fans. Marr too often relied on 'riffs' and it has been argued that his style of playing is too elitist and made-up to be true guitar. Certainly Marr was capable of some brilliance but much of it is just basic playing. Andy Rourke is and was a very adaptable player, capable of many different styles of playing with no special effects or mixing- what you hear is what he plays there and then. He even plays double bass and cello on some tracks.
Slap/funk bass, which Rourke uses on the track Barbarism Begins At Home, is also VERY difficult to be any good at, and BBAH is a perfect example of how good it can sound.
Also I must point out that the bassist needs much more technical ability than normal six-string guitars. A bassist is certainly much more musical than a guitarist, needing a greater degree of theory and musical understanding.
The two players solo success has also been very different. Marr's solo attempts have often been seen as lacking, whilst many of Rourke's projects have met with considerable success. Personally I do enjoy Marr's contribution to Electronic, his project with New Order's Bernard Sumner. This has proven to be unique and exciting.
So whilst I acknowledge Johnny Marrs skilled guitar-playing, I lelieve that Andy Rourke should also be acknowledged at least as an equal, if not better.
Feel free to email me if you want.

Disagree. Marr is undeniably talented but his contribution to the Smiths cannot be said to be greater than that of Morrissey & I would give them equal importance in the band.

Would probably have to settle for Mozzer, but neither are as good separately as they are together.
